The Challenges of Being Raw

“On matters of style, swim with the current, on matters of principle, stand like a rock.” —Thomas Jefferson

The above photo is just another one of my BLT open face sandwiches that I’ve been into lately, simply because I’m enthusiastic about being able to make raw cashew mayonnaise!

Day 69 finds me not my best today…

And I skipped writing about what I ate yesterday, but pretty much ate the same foods as today.

I think I’m either:

  • 1. Going through a “detox” phase.
  • 2. I’m just a bit frustrated that I don’t have a dehydrator and can’t really afford one just yet.

Matt Amsden’s Famous Onion Bread

So, I was trying to make that onion bread from Matt Amsden’s RAWvolution book and letting the stuff dehydrate in near my kitchen’s south facing window. It’s an experiment so far and we’ll see how it goes. Apparently, it takes more than 24 hours to actual dehydrate the bread so that it’s ready for consumption.

A Bit of Frustration

But I’m frustrated when others around me can’t share in my joys of being a raw vegan. And for that, even though I thank all my fellow raw vegans who support me online, it’s just tough when you’re always exposed to the doubters and critics. It can make it a very lonely life in real life.

Anyway, here is today’s raw diary so far:

Breakfast

  • 1 – raw cacao banana smoothie (with spirulina)
  • 1 – tangerine
  • 1 – avocado

Lunch

  • 1 – plate of “finger foods” (olive on raw mayo and a cucumber slice)
  • 1 – cup of fresh salsa

Dinner

  • 1 – medium salad (lettuces, spinach, sprouts, tomatoes, olives, in oil and red wine vinegar)
  • 1 – raw cacao banana smoothie (with spirulina)

. . . .

  • I agree with your frustration at others refusal to try even a little more raw food. I walk through the grocery store and can assess some obvious health conditions (I'm an RN) and then I look at what's in their grocery cart I know why those conditions exist! It's sad, but I'm thankful for what I know about living a high raw lifestyle. I thankful for feeling so healthy and energetic when I'm behaving myself, and I'm even thankful for feeling not so good when I misbehave. Why--because it gets me scurring right back on my raw path. Health to you. Ginny Fisher
  • Hi earthmother!

Thanks so much! That sandwich was yummy and I wanted to get a closer shot of it for the details. Yes, that bread by Lydia's Organics is nice, if a bit small and interesting. It's recommended that you soak the bread in water for a split second to soften it up. Otherwise, it's too hard for the teeth. (I learned the hard way)

Well thanks for empathy. I'll have to check out that book you recommend by the Boutenko children? I'm familiar with their story from youtube videos, but I should start reading their books as well.

Thanks for the recommendation and your moral support! :o)
  • What time is lunch being served? ;) Your sandwich looks divine. Next time I'm at Whole Foods, I'm looking for that bread (Lydia's) you mentioned in your previous post. You know, I have yet to try any raw bread or crackers. I think it's about time.

I am so sorry you are not feeling supported in your chosen lifestyle, Carlos. I just finished a wonderful book you might want to check out – Fresh by Sergei and Valya Boutenko. Besides being chock full of wonderful recipes, these two amazing young adults offer profound insights from their own journey toward health and healing. Now in their twenties, both adopted a raw foods lifestyle when they were still in grade school. They talk about what it's like to stay with the raw diet even when friends and medical doctors were advising them otherwise. I was just blown away by them. Very inspirational read.
  • Hi Paulina!

Well it's good to know we share the same feelings about this. :o)

It will get better, and we just have to stay committed to our cause.

And kudos to you for deciding to save up for a dehydrator! Eventually I'll get mine too, then I won't have to dehydrate my onion bread on the window sill.
  • Hi Eva!

That's quite the coincidence with the "famous onion bread". This was my first time and well, it's not good enough to take a photo of just yet. Maybe after the 3rd try. Mine came out with holes in places when I was sure I avoided holes. But I'll make it a bit thicker next time.
  • I'm feeling the same way you are feeling. If I tell my parents that I'm almost all raw, they'd freak out. I also wish I had a dehydrator but because I'm so committed to this lifestyle now, I decided that I will save up for one!
  • Eva
    Hey,

I totally understand what you mean, I am facing resistance from family members and colleagues as well. And I don't even want to 'convert' them, I just want their acceptance of my lifestyle choices and simply be able to eat in peace without having everyone comment on my meals :-).

And wow, what a coincidence, I have the famous onion bread in my dehydrator right now. I flipped it over, so it's in its second phase :-). It's for a dinner party tomorrow and it smells divine! I hope yours will be just as good. I can't wait to try it, along with some spreads and dips from the same cookbook.

    All the best
    Eva
